It can interesting only if there is a really active community, with a specific identity, and awesome hosts... Anyway, it's only a personal opinion, but I know i'm not the only one to think that.... it can work only on a short scale, because you need a host to take care of the community... and the purpose of ning is a self service social networks for people who want to create their own online communities... I have just issue with that... each communities are particular, work differently, and need different functionality, different IA, different experiences... etc... to be successful...
