The New Facebook is not that bad after all…
Facebook caused a lot of controversy within its community when it launched the New Facebook earlier last month, with angry users going as far as creating ‘I hate the New Facebook‘ groups. It took me a little while getting used the New Facebook, but I am now officially hooked! I will go as far as saying that my Facebook usage has increased in recent weeks because of the layout update!
Remember the days when, as soon you logged on, you had countless number of invites to become a werewolf / vampire, or asked to Superpoke someone? Developers turned Facebook into a cluttered nightmare that reminded me of the glittery profiles we used to see on Myspace a couple of years ago!
I really like the tab system to classify the info you display on your profile, very similar to a blog layout. And today, I discovered the creme de la creme: the RSS import function under the ‘wall’ tab.
Installing badly designed apps (that often don’t work) to import your Flickr photos or your blog feed is a thing of the past. The import function lets you import feeds from a multitude of Social Media sites onto your Facebook profile, very much like Friendfeed.
The benefits for me are clear:
- An easy way for me to aggregate my stuff without using a third party website such as Friendfeed (although I wouldn’t want my Twitter updates to appear on my Facebook profile as they are usually business related…)
- I can keep my Social Media friends up to date with what I get up to online
- But I can also tempt my technophobe friends (roughly 97% of my Facebook contacts) into learning about Social Media in a non-threatening environment – Facebook!
Interestingly, I have also noticed a number of websites adopting a tabbed layout clearly showing that the way websites are designed is rapidly evolving…
What do you think about the New Facebook? Hit or miss?

I like it

I like the new Facebook as well. As with anything, if you’re not used to it (and not expecting it) it can take a while to get used to everything, and a lot of people are inherently conservative and resistant to change.
But it’s easier to use, easier to organise, has a cleaner layout, and means I’m spending less time scrolling or clicking looking to find something.
Hopefully most people will come round to it, although judging at the level of protest against it current, you’d think Facebook had been forcing all users to watch them drowning kittens when they logged in.

I agree – I really like the new Facebook! I think people are upset about it because it’s such a major change (as Gary said). But then again, everyone was up in arms when the NewsFeed came out – and yet, we all got used to it because it became an integral part of staying up-to-date with our FB social network.

I think the new layout is harder to understand for non-bloggers as they are not used to the tabs system… I am sure everyone will get over the redesign soon enough though!

Overall i like the new facebook – but by removing most of your widgets and putting them in a non-intuitive “boxes” tab, they’ve diluted your personal identity within facebook.
it’s like going to a networking or social event and told everybody has to wear the same t-shirt and jeans. People want / need individuality… and now some of that has been taken away.
