#inaug09 – Obama and Social Media Part II
The Social Media campaign created and managed by GMMB last year on behalf of Barack Obama was truly fascinating – Obama was indeed everywhere online from mainstream sites such as Facebook, Myspace or Twitter to niche communities such as Eons or AsianAve.
Today millions of people are attending or watching the Obama Inauguration on TV/Online, but are also creating content live across the Globe through Social Media.
1) Avatars
Shepard Fairey’s ‘Hope’ poster of Barack Obama became the iconic image of a historic campaign. I spotted lots of Twitterers this morning who changed their avatar using Obicamicon.me. Here’s Lolly-Obama!

2) Twitter
There were sightings of the Fail Whale earlier this afternoon but I think that Twitter coped pretty well overall! The Inauguration Twitter stream is right here.

Inaugural Ceremony Tweets can be found right here: #inaug09
3) Flickr
New photos are being added to the Inauguration 2009 group as we speak – keep your eyes peeled on that one! I really enjoyed taking a look at the various newspaper headlines from around the world!
4) CNN and Facebook
The CNN / Facebook integration was my personal favourite of the day, but I don’t think Facebook will replace Twitter quite yet. I LOVED the CNN/Facebook interface and the concept certainly has a lot of potential to engage with non-geeks!

The stats released, as of noon ET are as follows (Source: Mashable)
1. There were 200,000+ status updates through the Facebook integration on CNN.com
2. At that time, 3,000 people commented on the Facebook CNN feed per minute
3. Obama’s Facebook Fan Page has more than 4 million fans and in excess of 500,000 wall posts
5) Inauguration Speech Wordle Cloud
Kudos to Nick Burcher for spotting it!

Last but certainly not least, I received this ad for Phillips Power4life whilst watching CNN (PR agency was at the right place at the right time), a (hopefully) humorous conclusion to this blog post – enjoy!

Feel free to redirect me to anything exciting / different / super-dooper cool that you’ve seen today!

Checking in on Social Media in the US is a completely different story…

During my recent trip to NYC, I couldn’t help but notice how much more mainstream Social Media is in the USA. As Adam pointed out in his recent 10 Foursquare secrets worth making public post, Foursquare [and other services] is much advanced than it is in London. Here are a few interesting things I spotted

A few months ago, I blogged about falling out of love with Flickr, as I felt Yahoo! had failed to keep up with the rapidly changing social media landscape, and Flickr users’ needs (no Twitter/Facebook integration, lack of innovations within the platform, no status updates but to name a few). I am a huge fan
A brand engaged with me the other day…

As a consumer, I recommend and even occasionally express my discontent about brands via Twitter or my blog. As a social media pro, I spend most of my days managing online presences for other brands, engaging with both fans and detractors. And the other day, for the first in absolutely ages, a brand engaged with

I’ve been busy in the last couple of weeks , hence the lack of blogging but here’s a quick one for the road – the credit goes to @jetube for this According to Nico, girls have only use four different types of Facebook profile pics and coming to think of it, his analysis is pretty
Good-bye Flickr Pro

I’ve fallen out of love with Flickr… I have been a Flickr Pro user for a number of years, but recently decided not to renew my Pro account. Flickr was the place where I kept my travel shots, but also indulged in a little macro photography now and again. The Flickr community is awesome and
Customer service 2.0 – Easyjet

I had a bit of an epic journey attempting to travel back to Lyon for the festive season today. I missed my 5AM train to Gatwick, jumped on a taxi and arrived at the airport only to be informed that my Easyjet flight was delayed. Armed with a good book and a very large cup
Latest viral game on Facebook – Miss Fighter

I am not a gamer, but I do enjoy good old fashioned 2D games now and again. I had a lot of fun playing Hot Dog Bush earlier this this year, when Bush was ‘kicked out’ of the White House. The latest game hotting things up in France, is Miss Fighter, a simple 2D game
Cobra Twindaloo

Cobra recently created this Twitter micro-site to celebrate National Curry Week, whereby Twitter users can enter their @names and Tweet their curry type. The activity aims to reinforce Cobra’s positioning as the beer of choice when eating a curry. There are however a number of fails in their approach: – I would have liked to
The Socialisation of TV Advertising
about 8 months ago - 3 comments
TV is becoming increasingly social. As Neil points out, Twitter went into complete overdrive over the X-Factor last Sunday following Lucie Jones’ shock eviction, with 8 out of the top 10 Twitter trending topics being X-Factor related*. I got rid of my TV when I moved in my flat last year; my flat is on
Adventures in Twitterland… (bring back the link love)
about 9 months ago - 2 comments
Funny things often happen in Twitterland… Today’s randomness definitely got me LOLing away behind my screen… Back in the old days, bloggers used to link back to one another other as a sign of appreciation, and an effective way of sharing content. Linking back also helped increase our Page Rank and Technorati authority; we (bloggers)

And talking of CNN, they had the fantastic Photosynth http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2009/44.president/inauguration/themoment/ The Downside? You need to install Silverlight first if you don’t have it.
