Following the success of this post, I felt it was time to write a quick note about plugins.
Now that your WordPress blog is up and running, the next step is to customize your blog by adding plugins. Plugins are small programs that add extra features to your blog; there are currently thousands of different plugins available.
Adding a plugin is very simple process:
- On the dashboard , go to the plugin tab, click add new, browse for the plugin you wish to add and click activate
- To customize your plugin, go to the settings section and select the plugin you wish to customize
But how do you know which plugins are right for you? Here is a list of plugins that I currently use on this blog:
1) Askimet blocks spam comments. A must have plugin in your tool box!
2) All in one SEO Pack is a nifty little plugin that take cares of all things SEO on your blog
3) Have you spotted the website preview boxes that pop up on my blog when clicking a link – Apture transforms your blog into a connected media experience keeping readers engaged without leaving your blog
4) Disqus is an awesome threaded commenting system that helps you stay on top of your comments on the blogosphere. Readers can also logon to comment using their Facebook or Twitter profiles
5) FeedBurner Feedsmith detects all ways to access your original WordPress feeds and redirects them to your FeedBurner feed so you can track every possible subscriber
6) Redirector is a plugin that lets you redirect any page to an internal or external URL. For instance clicking the ‘digital scrapbook’ tab on my blog will redirect you to my Tumbr
7) Sociable automatically adds links on your posts, pages and RSS feed to your favourite social bookmarking sites. There are lots of different bookmarking out there but Sociable is by far my favourite
Social Homes adds a sidebar widget containing a subtle list of all your social homes as linked favicons
9) TweetMeme Button adds a Digg style button to your blog posts letting your readers conveniently re-tweet your masterpieces!
10) WP Greetbox shows a different message to your visitor depending on which site they are coming from. For example, you can ask Digg visitors to Digg your post, Google visitors to subscribe to your RSS feed, and more! A great little plugin to increase your number of subscribers
