July ’09, yet some journos still don’t get social media…
TweetFlicking through my morning paper showed yet again that some old media journos really don’t get social media!
Old media has been suffering over the past couple of years, and that’s been evident with larger entities across several industries–print, television, film and music. Can this struggle be solely attributed to the rise of new media? The answer is yes, however it’s nice to see that the film and music industries are increasingly engaging with their audiences and attempting to tackle piracy through exciting social media campaigns.
Sites such as Twitter, Facebook or blogs are increasingly being discussed in papers, sadly often in a derigatory way. If you listen to journos, Twitter users ‘don’t have a sense of identity’, Facebook is being used by gang members to plan their next crime and bloggers are amateur writers who clearly should stay away from keyboards! And it really irrritates me to see that some journos are obsessed with celebs on Twitter misleading readers into believing they can talk to celebs. There’s surely more to Twitter than just celebs? Is it too much to ask to read something insightful about Twitter, blogs or other social networks for a change?

Could it be because twitter is effectively a form of media and there for in direct competition with journalists working on the more traditional supports?

@verygoodservice – Definitely and Twitter was heavily criticised in the past. It really irritates me to see the word Twitter constanly associated with celebs… It sounds as though Twitter is a celebs hang out

It sadly appears Laurence that even the slightest insight into these things really will not be found in the tabloids (and even les so in the broadsheets) – until these guys manage to get their heads around that the “social” aspect of social media is there for a reason all they will see is the celebs and the geeks!
