Using social content to drive sales through search

There’s a very wrong assumption floating around the heads of many CMO’s and small business owners alike, that having a Facebook page and Twitter profile is enough, because social media is this new and wonderful thing which is going ‘to do wonders’ for your brand. I am sure we’ve all had clients who have asked for thousands of fans and followers, as quickly as possible without any content, or budget to create conte...

A few social, search and mobile trends for 2012

I am not usually a big fan of prediction posts, particularly when it comes to social, but recently spotted a handful of predictions by industry experts worth mentioning.   Without further ado, here are a handful interesting social, search and mobile trends for 2012. These 3 disciplines are inextricably interlinked, yet too often siloed, so I figured I would sum them all up in one...

    Blogfest 2011 - Topshop's smart Tumblr strategy

Here is at long last, my first entry for the Bathroom Blogfest 2011 on how Topshop uses to Tumblr to 'climb out'. I do promise I'll put up a bathroom related post tomorrow for fun though! Here we go! Brands have embraced social media as a means to 'climb out' and 'hang out' with their fans on social networks. Some brands do it well, others have had their fails...  I've been in working in the social industry for a ...

Best social media campaigns of 2009 (part 1/2)

Inspired by Adam Vincenzini’s the top 99 of ’09 , here’s a list of my fav social media campaigns and digital shenanigans of 2009:

January 2009 – The United Sites of Obama

The Obama election campaign was arguably the greatest social media media ever orchestrated to date.

Like a lot of web innovators, the Obama campaign did not invent anything completely new. Instead, by bolting together social networking applications, both niche and mainstream under the banner of a movement, they created an unforeseen force to raise money, organize locally, fight smear campaigns and get out the vote that helped them topple the Clinton More >

La main la plus sexy du monde

AKA the sexiest hand in the world, is a revamped commercial for Perrier, which originally aired on our screens in the 1970s and was censured for being too saucy.

The ‘new’ advert is generating a nice bit of buzz at the moment, combining both traditional advertising, and a digital campaign which includes a dedicated micro-site with video archives from the 1970s, a Facebook Fan Page, viral vids and a few other goodies including an upcoming ebay auction.

Trendstream Global web index

Accurate Social Media stats are hard to come by, however Trendstream have recently released a Global Map of Social Web, which illustrates peoples participation across the world.

The map is created from data collected as part of the Global Web Index research program, which analyses web usage, social web and associated impact in 16 countries across the globe.

The map visualises the number of active bloggers, social networkers, video sharers, photo uploaders and microbloggers. The length of the curve represents the penetration and the size represents the universe size.

Here are some of the key finding they’ve identified:

Customer service 2.0 – Easyjet

I had a bit of an epic journey attempting to travel back to Lyon for the festive season today. I missed my 5AM train to Gatwick, jumped on a taxi and arrived at the airport only to be informed that my Easyjet flight was delayed. Armed with a good book and a very large cup of black coffee, little did I know that my journey would turn into a nightmare. I won’t bore you with all the details (it took me ages to get my suitcase back and I ended up being stranded in Croydon!) but  Easyjet have been doing More >

You might have recently seen a star-studded ad promoting California Tourism on TV, I am indeed talking about the one with Arnie, Ugly Betty’s Vanessa Williams and Becks.

Because we live in a 2.0 world, the folks at California Tourism have decided to organise a UK-wide YouTube audition to find the next person who will get to star in the ad alongside these A-listers. Pretty cool, huh?

Here’s the TV ad:

And here’s Adam Buxton explaining how this all works:

Interested in taking part? There’s a lovely micro-site here, a Facebook Fan Page there and a Twitter feed over there.

When can you start? Gotta love More >

Rage against the x-factor

Here are a couple of fun experiments that I recently spotted the Social Web:

Rage against the x-factor A couple of Facebookers have created a group in an attempt to organise a mass-purchase of the track ‘Killing in the name’ from December 13th as a protest to the X-Factor dullness.

Social Media brought back the Wispa bar, but can it wipe that smug smile off Simon’s Cowell’s face? Let’s see, shall we?

The Twitter hashtag is #ratm4xmas should you feel the urge to tweet about this initiative!

The lovely people @clothes2order have also jumped on the bandwagon and are offering free set up costs on any t-shirt from More >
